YUCCA VALLEY — In the second game Tuesday evening at the Joshua Springs High School Thunderdome, the varsity boys basketball team hammered the visiting Warriors from Apple Valley Christian, 63-50.

The final score does not tell the story of how closely the game was contested until late in the fourth quarter.

The first quarter saw Joshua Springs take the slimmest of leads, 14-12, thanks to Zack Ontiveros’ hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Apple Valley Christian began the game with a full-court press, but abandoned it midway through the first quarter, bowing to the Joshua Springs boys, who continually broke the pressure and found easy baskets.

Halftime found the score knotted at 28-28, a snapshot of just how close this game was.

During the break, Joshua Springs introduced its Winter Fest princes and princesses from each of the high school’s classes.

Zack Ontiveros was honored as the single senior member of the boys team, and as a Winter Fest prince from the senior class.

The freshman prince and princess were Josh Ballinger and Hope Rotstein. The sophomore class royalty were Brett Hollins and Ashlyn Morrison. Jordan Nesbit and Abigail Lombardo wore the junior class crowns.

For the senior class, Ontiveros was joined by princes Andy Frazer and Josh Leichtner.

Senior Winter Fest princesses were Brea Polos, London Rohatsch and Kelsea Begnaud.

After the drum line’s drum roll, under the direction of Ron Taber, the 2010 Winter Fest king and queen were announced: Frazer and Polos received the purple robes and accompanying crowns, to the cheers of their loyal subjects.

Frazer was escorted by parents Steven and Cheryl Frazer. The senior king enjoys cooking, watching movies, playing tennis and hanging out with friends. His fondest high school memories are winning the 2007 and 2009 CIF championships in football.

Parents Jodi and Phillip Polos escorted the senior class queen, who was involved in ASL, Miss Yucca Valley and volleyball.

After the halftime festivities were over, the Joshua Springs boys began to slowly wiggle away from the Warriors.

The end of the third quarter saw the Lightning inch ahead by seven points as they found their legs, hitting layups and stealing errant passes.

The fourth quarter found the Lightning clinging to a 46-42 lead with four minutes left. Joshua Springs’ fouls put the Warriors in an advantageous situation, however, as the home team sent the visitors to the line with one-plus-one opportunities.

As the clock ticked under four minutes, Apple Valley Christian set the home crowd’s hearts pumping as the Warriors took the lead, 47-46.

No problem!

Brett Hollins hit a key jump shot with 3:30 left, and a steal by the Lightning defense and a foul on the play put Levi Garrido on the line for two free throws.

He made one of them, which with 3:17 left in the game put the Lightning ahead for good at 51-47.

The rest of the game consisted of Joshua Springs players being fouled by Warriors and the Lightning boys hitting their free-throw attempts to stretch their lead.

Top scorers for Joshua Springs were Garrido with 21 points and 10 rebounds; Ontiveros with 15 points, including three 3-pointers; Erik McClay, 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Hollins had a superb night with 17 rebounds and six blocked shots.
