League seeks athletes with special needs
TWENTYNINE PALMS — Special-needs children in the Twentynine Palms area who would like to take part in Little League baseball may soon have a chance to do so, thanks to a program Twentynine Palms Little League officials are trying to get started this year.
League President Ray Gonzales said Tuesday, Feb. 2 the Challenger Division has been part of Little League for many years but that the local league has never been able to form a team.
“This year we have had a few parents come out and ask,” he said. “I think it would be a great thing for the kids to get out there and play some baseball.”
Within the division, he noted, rules are modified to deal with each player’s limitations.
“It’s obviously controlled,” he said. “Each player gets adult supervision on the field, like a buddy out on the field to help them with what needs to be done.”
Gonzales added that Twentynine Palms league officials are already in talks with officials from Tri-Valley Little League in Yucca Valley about interleague play should Twentynine Palms get a special needs team together.
He also talked about letting the Challenger Division team play Little League board members or teams from some of the league’s younger divisions.
“There is not an age restriction,” he said, agreeing that he would like to have a Challenger Division team in place by opening day.
“Right now I have three,” he said of players already signed up.
“We are always looking for more coaches, more volunteers,” he said. “That team is going to need a lot of volunteers, with needed one adult per child out there. Anybody interested give me a call and we’ll get them signed up.”
